About Us

Our department originated as a neurosurgical team within the Department of Surgery at this university, and was officially established as the Department of Neurosurgery in January 1967. In 2003, we launched an Endovascular Neurosurgery Division and became a global pioneer in developing a hybrid operating room equipped with state-of-the-art imaging technology.

We provide comprehensive surgical treatment for a wide range of neurological disorders-not only intracranial diseases, but also vascular lesions of the head and neck, spinal cord and spinal column disorders, and even peripheral nerve diseases.

Our Care

Treating Brain and Spinal Cord Disorders
with Minimally Invasive and Patient-Friendly Therapies

At our Department of Neurosurgery, we are committed to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care for a wide range of neurological conditions. This includes not only diseases of the brain itself, but also vascular disorders affecting the carotid and subclavian arteries that supply blood to the brain, spinal cord and spinal column disorders, as well as peripheral nerve diseases. We emphasize both surgical and conservative (non-surgical) approaches to tailor the most appropriate treatment for each patient.

We were among the first in the world to develop a hybrid operating room equipped with cutting-edge imaging technologies, enabling us to perform minimally invasive surgeries that are gentle on the body. Our department is internationally recognized for its expertise and treatment outcomes, particularly in catheter-based procedures for unruptured cerebral aneurysms-the leading cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage-and stroke. We also hold a global reputation for our successful management of intractable spinal cord diseases, such as syringomyelia.

In the field of brain tumor surgery, we have pioneered techniques that minimize damage to healthy brain tissue through the use of intraoperative imaging and endoscopic surgery. We are also one of the few neurosurgical departments in Japan to offer comprehensive team-based care at a mother-and-child medical center, specializing in pediatric neurological disorders, an area where national infrastructure remains limited.

Our mission is to alleviate the anxiety of patients living with neurological conditions and to deliver the best possible treatment outcomes.

Conditions

Neurosurgery is defined as the surgical discipline concerned with the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. At our hospital, we actively treat not only intracranial diseases, but also spinal cord and spinal column disorders, as well as peripheral nerve conditions.

We have world-class specialists equipped with cutting-edge technologies in each field of medicine. In the area of brain tumors, we perform skull base surgeries that are among the best in the world, and we conduct awake craniotomies for malignant brain tumors. In endovascular treatment, we utilize state-of-the-art devices such as flow diverters. Regarding spinal disorders, we offer a wide range of treatments from minimally invasive endoscopic procedures to highly complex spinal tumor surgeries. In addition, we provide advanced care in pediatric neurosurgery and head trauma. We are committed to performing minimally invasive surgeries that are gentle on the body, and we actively incorporate the latest technologies and medical devices into our treatments.

Research

“Innovation for Neuroscience” is Our Mission

Our driving force in research lies in identifying the current problems and challenges in medicine, and exploring solutions to make healthcare better.

We are conducting a wide range of research aimed at realizing truly innovative medical care. This includes immunotherapy to overcome malignant brain tumors that remain difficult to cure, the development of medical devices to enable minimally invasive treatments for cerebrovascular disorders and spinal diseases, and the advancement of cutting-edge imaging technologies.

Our work also extends to hemodynamic studies of cerebral aneurysms, the use of AI for improved medical information and diagnostics, as well as the development of telemedicine, ICT systems, and software-each contributing to the future of innovative healthcare.

Worldwide Network

“Advancing Brain and Spine Care Through Global Collaboration”

Jikei University School of Medicine has consistently produced outstanding physicians and researchers who are active in leading hospitals around the world, from the past to the present. Through ongoing exchanges with doctors from various countries-such as the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, and Indonesia-we continuously enhance our medical knowledge and skills. At the same time, we actively welcome physicians from around the world for observation and study, fostering a global perspective in medical practice. Most of our staff are capable of communicating in English, ensuring that there are no language barriers when interacting with patients from outside Japan.
